On Tuesday November 8th, the Fishers Island community voted to approve Walsh Park’s purchase of the Fishers Island School District land by a greater than 70% majority.
The Board of Walsh Park would like to thank the community for its support of this project and its endorsement of Walsh Park’s efforts to sustain and grow the year-round population of Fishers Island.
The discussions around the potential development of this property started over 20 years ago. Over 6 years ago, Walsh Park and the School District began formally exploring its potential. We would like to thank the members of the School Board, the School District and the Town of Southold for their partnership in helping us reach this crucial milestone.
There remains much work to be done to complete this project. Substantial funds will need to be raised, a further assessment of the infrastructure needs of the development must be completed, all regulatory approvals will need to be attained and final site plan and structural design decisions will need to be made. We anticipate this process taking several more years to complete, but we remain excited about its potential to positively impact the community.
Walsh Park looks forward to continuing its ongoing dialogue with the community, the ICB and the Town concerning the next phase of this crucial project. However, at this juncture, we felt it was most important to take a moment to thank the community for its overwhelming support of our mission.
With gratitude,
The Board of Directors of the Walsh Park Benevolent Corporation
